NORTH CHARLESTON -- Authorities continue to investigate why a 35-year-old North Charleston man died shortly after police arrested him on a gun charge early Saturday.
Family members describe Lucious Kelly as a brick mason and a father of three. He died about two hours after North Charleston police booked him into the Cannon Detention Center at about 5 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
Police had arrested Kelly on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm, according to Charleston County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Brady. Jail officials found Kelly unresponsive in the intake area of the jail about 7 a.m.
Workers tried to revive him and Charleston County paramedics took him to a local hospital, where doctors confirmed he had died.
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division, the Charleston County Coroner's Office and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate. The coroner's office will perform an autopsy.
Family members, through an attorney, said that Kelly suffered from sickle cell disease, asthma and high blood pressure.
