Capt. Michael F. White Jr. was promoted Friday to commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Charleston.

"I'm thrilled to be here," White said at the change-of-command ceremony in The Citadel's Mark Clark Hall.

The commander oversees Coast Guard operations in South Carolina and Georgia and holds the position for three years.

White takes over for Capt. Michael F. McAllister.

"I'm in great hands, for White has a wealth of experience," McAllister said. "White has the right experience to do well in Charleston."

White, originally from Fairfax, Va., recently served as a special assistant to the commandant at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

McAllister said the change-of-command ceremony is about the achievements, hard work and dedication of the many active and Reserve units.

"It's been a real privilege to work with many of you to keep our area safe," he said.

McAllister's next assignment will be as executive director to the deputy commandant for mission support at Coast Guard headquarters.
