Huntsville, Ala. -- The National Children's Advocacy Center recently presented the Outstanding Service Award in Medical Care to Dr. David Habib of the Medical University of South Carolina.

The honor came at the 26th National Symposium on Child Abuse. The service awards recognize professionals who have made significant contributions to addressing child abuse and exploitation in their communities.

Habib, director of the Division of Pediatric Care at MUSC, was recognized for his collaborative partnerships with the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center in Charleston and the Dorchester Children's Center in Summerville.

He envisioned and built the capacity of the medical services available through the Violence Intervention Prevention Program housed at the Charleston center. In five years, the number of children served grew from fewer than 300 children to more than 1,500 children receiving specialized medical services.
