A 66-year-old Mount Pleasant man was arrested Sunday after police were called to the Bayview Acres subdivision for a report of a man walking around drunk and naked in a marsh, according to a police incident report.

When Mount Pleasant police arrived about 7:10 p.m., they reported that they saw a man in the marsh carrying a shotgun. While officers were there, they heard a gunshot, then saw the man walking toward them, wearing swim trunks and shoes and holding the gun with the barrel pointed in the air.

Police told the man to drop his weapon, which he did.

Robert Harvey Payne of Bayview Drive is charged with three felony counts of first degree assault and battery, because there were three people in the direction of the shot he had fired, according to the report.

He is charged with discharging a firearm in the town limits, disorderly conduct and drunkenness in public, all misdemeanors. He also is charged with indecent exposure, also a misdemeanor, because one of the neighbors said he had had his pants down and was exposing himself, the report said.

Payne was being held in the Cannon Detention Center on bail amounts totaling $351,212 set Monday by Charleston County Magistrate Linda S. Lombard.
