The Coast Guard was searching late today for a Mount Pleasant man missing after his boat overturned about 16 miles offshore.

Ronald Fowler, 36, was last seen at noon Monday, the Coast Guard said. Another boater on a sailing vessel at about 1:30 p.m. spotted Fowler’s 17-foot Mitzi skiff overturned off of Charleston.

A search and rescue effort was launched by controllers at Coast Guard Sector Charleston, and at about 2 p.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Facility in Charleston, arrived on scene. The overturned boat was identified as the one belonging to Fowler.

Also joining the search were the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Yellowfin, and a C-130 Hercules and an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew, both from Coast Guard Air Station at Elizabeth City, N.C.

Anyone with information about the missing boater is asked to call Coast Guard Sector Charleston Command Center at 843-740-7050.
