A motorcyclist was killed after striking a deer Tuesday morning on S.C. Highway 61 in Dorchester County, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, identified as 31-year-old Cody Alan Davis of Summerville, was traveling south on S.C. 61 around 5:40 a.m., struck a deer and was thrown from the bike.

Davis was pronounced dead on the scene, said S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the Dorchester County Coroner's Office. 

The road was closed for several hours as a result of the crash but was re-opened by 8:30 a.m., authorities said.
