Memorial to honor soldier killed in Iraq

Sameer A.M. Rateb

The friends and family of a Summerville paratrooper who died in Iraq last year will hold a benefit in his honor starting 8 p.m. Friday at Oasis Bar & Grill on James Island.

Sgt. Sameer A.M. Rateb, 22, died May 6, 2007, at Forward Operating Base Summerall in Bayji, Iraq, from injuries suffered in a non-combat-related incident.

Rateb grew up in Summerville and Goose Creek and was the original drummer for Two Steps Back before enlisting in the U.S. Army.

Members of that band and others will perform to celebrate Rateb's life, said Stu Campbell, Rateb's friend and Two Steps Back singer.

Donations will be accepted for an Operation USO Care Package to deployed troops. A memorial also will be held 6 p.m. Saturday at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island.
