Memorial to be dedicated to former Post and Courier reporter

Jasiri Whipper

North Charleston city officials on Thursday will dedicate a memorial to former Post and Courier reporter Jasiri L. Whipper, who was killed following an automobile accident in 2008.

The dedication will be at 1 p.m. at the Felix Pinckney Community Center, 4764 Hassell Ave., in the Liberty Hill section of North Charleston. The recognition includes a flower garden and a memorial placed in the ground.

Whipper was killed following an auto accident on Interstate 95 in Florence County in December 2008. He had been involved in a separate accident, had exited his car and was standing outside his vehicle when a second vehicle struck him. It had been a day of rainy weather.

Whipper, 24, covered North Charleston and Berkeley County community news for the newspaper. He was a 2002 graduate of the Charleston County School of the Arts and held a bachelor’s degree in English from Morehouse College in Atlanta. He grew up in North Charleston.

Mayor Keith Summey said Whipper deserves the recognition for his efforts as a role model for other young black men in the city.
