The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. today. Retired Navy Capt. Chaplain Roscoe Rector will be guest speaker. Rector has been a hospital chaplain at the Charleston VAMC since 2003 and served four years in the Reserve and 32 years active duty. The ceremony will be in the flag garden in front of the hospital, 109 Bee St., Charleston.
The North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center, in partnership with Blue Star Museums, is offering free admission to all active-duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The museum is at 4975 Centre Pointe Drive, North Charleston.
At 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Vietnam Support Base at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, officials are hosting a “Sharing a Remembrance” in observance of Memorial Day. Instead of featuring a guest speaker, the museum will invite members of the audience to come forward and say a few words about someone they would like to be remembered for giving their life in service. Guests can state the person’s name or say a few words about them. The museum will offer free admission from 8 to 9 a.m. at, 40 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant.
The Guard is asking residents to pause and remember the 16 members who have died while in support of combat operations. Since Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 17,000 S.C. Army and Air National Guard men and women have served. There are more than 1,000 deployed soldiers and airmen from the S.C. National Guard.
