GOOSE CREEK -- A man suffered superficial burns to his face after his crabbing vessel caught fire near the Bushy Park Boat Landing on Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to the salt marsh side about 8:30 a.m. and saw the 19-foot Chris-Craft burning about 200 feet off the landing, Goose Creek Rural Fire Lt. Gary Melton said.

The man escaped the fire and caught a ride back from another boat. He declined medical treatment.

Melton said their hoses couldn't reach the fire. A U.S. Coast Guard vessel arrived and monitored the fire until it burned out to make sure the surrounding marsh didn't ignite.

The boat was a complete loss, Melton said.

It will be up to the owner to salvage the boat, authorities said.
