Man, 21, shot to death in Line Street apartment

Two holes are visible in the screen door of a downtown apartment Friday.

Shots fired through a screen door killed a 21-year-old man inside an apartment at the Gadsden Green public housing complex downtown early Friday, authorities said.

Charleston police responded to 235 Line St., Apartment D, at 1:24 a.m. and found Thomas Tony Shine of North Charleston lying on the floor, according to an incident report.

Shine died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Scott Ramsey said.

As of Friday afternoon, two holes still were visible in the rear screen door of the apartment. No suspect description has been released, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said.

Shine had been convicted of possession of marijuana and resisting arrest, according to a State Law Enforcement Division criminal history check.

Arthur Lawrence, president of the Gadsden Green Residents Association, said the area has had issues with drugs and people who don't live there causing problems. They'll often see increased patrols, but they fade after a while, he said.
