Man shot in throat unable to talk to investigators

A 36-year-old man recovering from a shotgun wound to the throat wasn't able to tell investigators why someone shot him early Tuesday near Summerville.

Deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said they have no suspects and don't know why the man was targeted outside the Haven Oaks Apartments, which is just northwest of Orangeburg and Boonehill roads.

"He is unable to communicate right now," said Maj. John Garrison, sheriff's spokesman. "If someone actually was a witness, we'd be more than happy to talk with them."

Garrison said Robin David Walker Jr., who lives at the complex, was shot at close range by someone armed with a shotgun. About 5:15 a.m., the Sheriff's Office received several 911 calls about a single gunshot and a wounded man lying near an oak tree between two apartment buildings.

Crime-scene investigators did not find any shell casings.

A helicopter took Walker to Medical University Hospital, where surgeons stabilized him. He was expected to survive.

Garrison said the Haven Oaks Apartments at 523 Orangeburg Road have been the source of drug problems and other headaches for law enforcement. But there was no indication about the motive in Tuesday's shooting.

"We tend to respond out there more frequently than other areas," Garrison said.
