A former Charleston man has been sentenced to federal prison for tax evasion.

John D. Fitzgerald, 38, of Las Vegas, transferred his income to a fraudulent trust and then to an offshore bank account in the Bahamas, according to the office of W. Walter Wilkins, U.S. Attorney for the district of South Carolina.

Evidence showed that from 1998 to 2002, Fitzgerald didn't report nearly $1 million in income from his Accurate Chiropractic Clinic in Mount Pleasant and evaded more than $260,000 in federal income tax, Wilkins' office said.

U.S. District Judge P. Michael Duffy sentenced Fitzgerald to a year in federal prison and two years of supervised release, Wilkins' office said. It said Fitzgerald, before the sentencing, paid the full amount of taxes due.
