WALTERBORO -- A 52-year-old Lodge man pleaded guilty Thursday to killing his wife and was sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime.

Eli Meyers shot 57-year-old Rose Meyers, his wife of more than 20 years, with a large-caliber hunting rifle in July 2010, officials said. He then tried to kill himself with a handgun but survived, according to authorities.

Meyers admitted to shooting his wife in a 911 call, officials said. Rescue workers found him clutching a cordless phone, and authorities arrested him after he was released from the hospital.
