A 48-year-old man died after the pickup he was driving crashed into the woods early this morning in the Bonneau area.

The 1998 Ford pickup was traveling east on Harristown road about 3 a.m. when the driver lost control and went off the road near Highway 17A, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.

“It ran off the right side of the roadway,” Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said. “The truck struck several trees.”

The man, James Seay of Moncks Corner, died on the scene. He and his passenger were not wearing seat belts.

The passenger, a woman, was ejected. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Medical University Hospital.

Collins said the cause of the crash was still under investigation.
