A man was killed Wednesday night when a dump truck struck him and his vehicle as he filled his car with gas along the shoulder of Interstate 526, police said.
Obrian Fludd, 37, of North Charleston, died at the scene of the accident, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Myers said.
The dump truck was eastbound on I-526 when it struck a car that was sitting on the shoulder with its lights on about 10:30 p.m., said Spencer Pryor, spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department.
Pryor said it appears that Fludd was on the outside of the shoulder filling the car when he and the car were hit.
The truck driver told police he didn't see the victim, and that he only heard a "thump," Pryor said.
The portion of the interstate was closed until shortly after 2 a.m.
The wreck is still under investigation, Pryor said.
