A 68-year-old man was killed and two others were injured Tuesday in a head-on collision in Colleton County.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a pickup truck traveling east on S.C. Highway 64 near St. Peters Road outside Walterboro crossed over the center line and collided with a car traveling west, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Beres said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Charles Simmons of Hampton, was taken to Colleton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, County Coroner Richard Harvey said. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death, Harvey said.

Simmons' wife, Anne Simmons, was trapped between the dashboard and the seat and had to be extricated before she was rushed to Medical University Hospital, Beres said. Neither Simmons nor his wife were wearing seat belts, Beres said.

The driver of a Mazda, a 48-year-old man from Charleston who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Colleton Medical Center, Beres said. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
