A retired Medical University of South Carolina doctor leaped to his death Tuesday afternoon from a six-story hospital parking garage in downtown Charleston, authorities said.

Police called the 3:15 p.m. incident on a busy stretch of Cannon Street between President Street and Courtenay Drive a suicide.

Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten also referred to the death as an apparent suicide and identified the man as David Mishkin, 65, of Charleston.

Late Tuesday, a woman who answered the phone at Mishkin's home confirmed that Mishkin was the man who died and a doctor at the university.

The university Web site lists Mishkin as retired and a professor emeritus at the university's College of Dental Medicine.

Police said he jumped, apparently from the fourth floor, of the university employee parking garage.

His covered body could be seen in the center of Cannon Street, far away from the building.

The roadway was blocked for about an hour as officials gathered evidence and cleared the scene. Motorists followed a short detour to President Street.

Hospital officials were waiting for more information late Tuesday before issuing any comments.
