FOLLY BEACH -- A 27-year-old man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition this weekend after authorities say he dove head-first from the Folly Beach pier into about 4 feet of water.

Folly Beach Public Safety officers responded to the pier at 6:55 p.m. Saturday and found Thomas Roy unconscious on the beach next to the pier, according to an incident report.

Two men who jumped feet-first into the water helped their friend to the beach, the report states.

Authorities performed CPR on Roy, who is from the town of Pelzer in Anderson County, and rushed him to a local hospital, according to EMS officials. His condition was unknown Monday.

Public Safety Chief Terry Boatwright said signs on the pier state that jumping from the pier is prohibited by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, but that doesn't stop some people from jumping.

Officers have cited people in the past for jumping from the pier, he said, but no one was charged in connection with this incident.
