A man whose body was found in the Francis Marion National Forest Tuesday died from a gunshot wound.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury announced the cause of death Wednesday afternoon, but would not say where or how many times the 31-year-old man identified as Robert Moultrie of Conway was shot.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death as a homicide.
Moultrie’s body was found inside a Chevrolet Suburban after someone reported seeing the sport-utility vehicle on Brick Church Road, less than a mile from Highway 41 in the southeast area of the forest. The body was sent to Medical University Hospital where an autopsy was completed.
Moultrie’s aunt said he was last seen Sunday night and reported him missing on Monday to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman told deputies Moultrie was upset and implied he might harm himself, according to an incident report.
Georgetown County officials are assisting Berkeley County with the investigation.
Anyone with information about Moultrie can call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111 or the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office at 719-4412.
