Police are looking for a man who led them on a high-speed chase and escaped into the woods Thursday.

North Charleston police did not release the man's name but said he may have been involved or have knowledge of several shootings in North Charleston.

Officers tried to pull over a red 2011 Chevrolet Camaro on U.S. Highway 78 near Trident Hospital shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, according Spencer Pryor, spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department.

The driver sped off and continued down U.S. 78 to NAD Road. Officers lost sight of the car, but minutes later another patrolman spotted it at Ashley Phosphate Road. The driver continued to Cross County Road, where he bailed out near the National Guard Armory and ran into the woods, Pryor said.

Police set up a perimeter, and officers, dogs and a Charleston County helicopter searched for several hours. The manhunt was called off about 4:30 p.m.

Police would not say why they withheld the man's name. He was described only as a thin black man with a short haircut. He was wearing black shorts and a white T-shirt.

Anyone with information should call North Charleston police at 554-5700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
