Man charged with murder in death of Walterboro man shot while leaving street race in Adams Run

  • Updated

A man is charged with murder in the death of a Walterboro man who was shot while driving away from a street race in the Adams Run area.

Robert Henry Campbell Jr., 41, of Regis Court in Charleston is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He was arrested Tuesday.

The charges stem from the Oct. 15 shooting of 26-year-old Wayne "Pedro" Bennett. His Chevy Silverado was shot several times as he drove on Willtown Road.

His truck hit a tree, and Charleston County sheriff's deputies found it running, with the back window shattered and bullet casings lying in the road. By then, a friend traveling in another vehicle had picked up the wounded Bennett and taken him to the St. Paul’s Fire Department. Bennett died at Medical University Hospital of a gunshot wound to the head.

A witness reported seeing Campbell shoot at Bennett's truck, according to an affidavit. Investigators also received several tips identifying Campbell as the shooter. Campbell told a detective he was at the scene and in the area where .40 caliber shell casings were located.

Before the gunfire, a friend said he saw Bennett in an argument over who won the four-wheeler street race. People later scrambled to get away as shots were fired.

The friend said Bennett attended as a spectator but often took his 1993 Ford Mustang to races around town, sometimes traveling to Georgia and North Carolina. Investigators don't know if Campbell participated in the race.

Deputies found a large amount of cash in Bennett's pockets, but a relative said it wasn't uncommon for Bennett to keep a lot of money on him.
