A 28-year-old Charleston man has been accused of lighting a cross on fire Oct. 23 outside Eastside Missionary Baptist Church on Meeting Street.
Tyhier Lasan Grant was arrested on Oct. 26 on charges of third-degree arson and malicious injury to a place of worship, both felonies, according to Charleston police Sgt. Elisabeth Wolfsen.
A Charleston police officer first noticed the burning cross at 4:20 a.m., Wolfsen said. Charleston firefighters extinguished the small blaze outside 584 Meeting St. while crime scene technicians and detectives investigated.
Charleston city surveillance cameras captured a suspect in a red jacket, black T-shirt, black pants and black-and-white sneakers bypassing a fence at the property shortly before the fire started, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Surveillance cameras showed the same suspect leave and later enter a convenience store on King Street, the affidavit states. Based on the security footage from the store, officers were able to identify the suspect as Grant.
Grant is being held at the Charleston County jail with bail set at $30,000. It's unclear from court records whether he has legal representation.
Wolfsen said the investigation is ongoing. Residents who wish to provide information can call 843-743-7200 and ask for the on-duty central detective.
