Charleston County sheriff's deputies have arrested a man accused of setting fire to a rental home on Folly Beach over the weekend.
Deputies charged William Whitfield III with second-degree arson in connection with a fire at 1713 E. Ashley Ave. on Saturday, Maj. John Clark said Monday.
Whitfield has been admitted to the Medical University Hospital. He will have a bond hearing upon his release, Clark said.
Investigators also are looking at Whitfield as a possible suspect in a fire on Lambs Road in North Charleston.
A neighbor reported the Folly Beach fire about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Folly Beach Fire Deputy Chief Brad Wade.
The Folly Beach, James Island and Charleston Fire departments responded to the call. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the rental home was engulfed in flames.
No one was home at the time of the fire, according to Wade.
