NORTH CHARLESTON — Authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of fatally striking a man in a wheelchair with his vehicle Aug. 31 before fleeing.
Daniel Villegas was arrested Sept. 7 by North Charleston police traffic investigators on the charge of hit-and-run accident with a death, police spokesman Harve Jacobs said.
Officers were dispatched at about 6:15 a.m. Aug. 31 to 3750 Dorchester Road just west of Interstate 26 for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The 49-year-old man was transported to Medical University Hospital for severe head injuries. He died of his injuries Sept. 3, the affidavit states.
The victim's damaged wheelchair was found on the sidewalk, along with his backpack, an incident report states. Vehicle debris littered the roadway.
Surveillance footage from the area showed a black coupe was headed west on Dorchester Road when it struck the victim as he was crossing the street in the crosswalk, the affidavit states. An automated license plate reader captured the suspect vehicle's information, which was shared with surrounding agencies.
The suspect vehicle was located at Detyens Shipyard Sept. 7 and Villegas was placed under arrest, the affidavit states.
Villegas allegedly told detectives in an interview he was "scared and the guy was in the middle of the road," before requesting an attorney, according to the affidavit.
Villegas is being held at the Charleston County jail. His bail was set at $100,000 during a hearing Sept. 8, according to a court clerk.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office has not identified the victim.
