A 53-year-old North Charleston woman was beaten to death inside her home Monday morning after arguing with a man, authorities said Tuesday.
Gregory Quinn Gathers, 47, of North Charleston is charged with murder in the beating death of Renee Nevarez at her home on Gaynor Avenue.
An affidavit said Gathers and Nevarez had an argument. Gathers told police he then punched her several times in the face and dragged her to the kitchen, where he continued to hit her.
At one point, the pair struggled over a knife, causing cuts to Nevarez's hands, the affidavit said. He kept hitting her until she fell to the floor motionless, it said.
Gathers fled the house and later told a relative what he had done. An incident report said Harry Gathers Jr., 79, of North Charleston called police and reported the death.
Police arrived at Gregory Gathers' Gumwood Boulevard apartment within minutes and took him into custody. The affidavit said he gave detectives a statement admitting to killing Nevarez.
Gregory Gathers is being held without bond at the Charleston County Detention Center.
