SUMMERVILLE -- A man who tried to move a fire truck because it was blocking his way not only failed to move the truck, he got himself arrested, authorities said.

Firefighters were on a medical call at Grove Apartment complex on 325 Midland Parkway, about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, when 22-year-old Antoine Hamilton of Goose Creek reportedly took it upon himself to move the truck.

"The fellows were inside the apartment when EMS told us someone was inside our truck trying to move it," Summerville Fire Department Battalion Chief Ronnie Bryant said. He said firefighters ran to the truck and discovered Hamilton "wasn't having too much luck." The fire truck had not moved. "He put it in reverse, but he didn't know how to take the brake off," Bryant explained.

Summerville Police Capt. Jon Rogers said someone had asked that the truck be moved shortly before Hamilton was found at the wheel.

Bryant said that when firefighters respond to an emergency, they often park wherever they can, and sometimes paths are blocked. Hamilton apparently was trying to get to work and wasn't going to wait until a firefighter could move the truck.

"It was blocking his path so he decided he was gonna move it," Bryant said.

Firefighters ordered Hamilton out of the truck, and police charged him with interfering with public property, Rogers said.
