Man accused of sex assault

Peter Miles Goodson

ISLE OF PALMS -- A visitor in town for a bachelor party weekend has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman.

Peter M. Goodson, 30, of New York City, was released from the Charleston County Detention Center on Sunday afternoon, one day after he was arrested by Isle of Palms police. Bond was set at $30,000.

According to an arrest affidavit, the female victim and some of her friends said they met the suspect and about 13 of his friends and acquaintances at a downtown Charleston bar Friday evening and decided to hang out.

After the bar closed at 2 a.m., the groups went back to the island, where the larger group had rented a home on Palm Boulevard for a bachelor party.

They stayed up drinking by the pool. As the night wore on, the victim and two of her friends were invited to spend the night, the affidavit states. The victim stayed in one bed and her friends slept in another, in the same room.

The victim said she awoke from sleep and discovered someone was having intercourse with her, the affidavit states. The three women in the room ran out and contacted police, identifying the defendant as the attacker, the affidavit said. Goodson was arrested and charged with criminal sexual conduct, third degree.

Goodson's attorney, Stephen Schmutz, said his client would cooperate with police in the investigation, and that Goodson has no previous criminal record.
