A 65-year-old man is accused of punching an elderly woman and choking her with her pants during a confrontation at their West Ashley home Tuesday, according to Charleston police.

Police say Stephen Craig Nelson attacked 78-year-old Barbara Pittillo as a hospice worker was helping prepare her for a shower at her Charlestowne Road home at 3:42 p.m.

The worker told officers that Nelson punched Pittillo in the chest and then wrapped the woman's pants around her neck and began choking her, according to a police report.

Paramedics examined Pittillo but she did not require treatment at a hospital, police said.

Jones, who reportedly confessed to striking Pittillo, was arrested on an assault charge and transported to the Charleston County jail, a police report said. Bail was set at $2,000.
