Trident Literacy will receive $65,000 to create a comprehensive family literacy program at its Celebration Station site on Reynolds Avenue in North Charleston.

More than 600 programs nationwide applied for these funds. Only seven grants were awarded. Trident Literacy’s grant is the only award in South Carolina.

Celebration Station is in the heart of the Chicora-Cherokee community. Eileen Chepenik, Trident Literacy’s executive director, said, “Within a mile of the site, nearly 1,500 adults do not have a high school credential and more than 800 have less than a ninth-grade education. These individuals are also experiencing high rates of unemployment.”

The program will work with 20 high-poverty parents and their preschool children. Parents also will be taught how to be better parents and will have structured interactive time with their children. The program will include financial literacy and home visits.
