The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named winners in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship and National Achievement Scholarship programs.

Merit Scholars were selected from among students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of corporate sponsors.

Sponsors provided scholarships for students who are children of their employees, residents of communities the company serves or who plan to pursue careers the sponsor encourages.

The following local students were named:

Pinewood Preparatory School student Ansley T. Bolick of Summerville received a scholarship from Science Applications International Corp. and plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Bishop England High School student Matthew G. Jones of Mount Pleasant received a scholarship from State Farm Companies Foundation and plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Academic Magnet High School student Sarah E. Malick of Mount Pleasant received a scholarship from Pfizer Inc. and plans to pursue a career in mathematics and pharmacy.

Homeschooled student Rachel H. Pettersen of Charleston received a scholarship from Boeing and plans to pursue a career in nursing.

African-American high school seniors who won Achievement Scholarship awards include:

Porter-Gaud student Mallory A. Banks of Summerville won a scholar- ship supported by the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Academic Magnet High School student Christina-Lin Brown of Charleston won a scholarship supported by Medical University of South Carolina and plans to pursue a career in anesthesiology.
