Low Country Deacons Alliance gives scholarships

The Low Country Deacons Alliance has granted scholarships to several local students as part of its “Award of Excellence” program essay contest.

The students were required to write a 300-500 word essay on science, biology, chemistry, mathematics, language, economics or politics.

The scholarships are awarded each year for four years to the participants maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average.

The recipients for 2012 are:

First Place: Kevin R. Horlback Jr. received a $700 scholarship. He is attending S.C. State University in Orangeburg. Horlback graduated with honors from Goose Creek High School.

Second Place: Symone Smalls received a $500 scholarship. She is attending Winthrop University. She is a graduate of Goose Creek High School.

Third Place: Brian Giles received a $400 scholarship. He is attending University of South Carolina-Beaufort as an education major. Giles is a graduate of Charleston County School of the Arts.

Scholarships are awarded annually to members of the Alliance churches.
