Tammy Hiott, director of nursing at Life Care Center of Charleston, was named Director of Nursing of the Year for Life Care Centers of America’s Eastern Division. The award was presented at Life Care’s annual directors of nurs-ing meeting in Tennessee. It is given to the director of nursing in each of Life Care’s seven divisions who demonstrates outstanding qualities in several areas, including customer service, staff development and successful state surveys.
Hiott was praised during the meeting for her continual drive to improve her nursing skills to serve the residents; putting together a cohesive team of caring nursing staff and decreasing the turnover rate for nursing aides by 45 percent; her clinical excellence, as shown in a deficiency-free state inspection for 2013; and her compassion for her staff, especially bringing in her pastor-husband to provide grief counseling and support when a nursing aide died this year.
Hiott was chosen for the award from all directors of nursing in Life Care’s Eastern Division, which encompasses 41 facilities in Georgia, Kentucky, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia. Life Care Center of Charleston, at 2600 Elms Plantation Blvd., North Charleston, is one of three skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in S.C. operated or managed by Life Care Centers of America.
