James Island resident and School of the Arts sixth-grader Macy Roberts has been dancing since she was two.

While visiting her cousin in Columbia, Macy put on one of her favorite dance outfits and took pictures around the city. And it was just her luck that Jo+Jax, the dancewear line she was wearing, was looking for a new model.

She sent in one of her photos for the contest and is now in the top three. More than 900 dancers entered the national contest.

Jo+Jax is a dancewear line started by two Utah sisters. The pair noticed while working as Rockettes that a lot of their dancewear was too short because of their height. So they started making their own clothes.

Macy and her mother, Kim Roberts, said they have always been fans of the line because it’s fun and colorful. They found out about the contest from the company’s Facebook page.

Kim and her husband, Mike Roberts, said dance was a natural thing for Macy because they own a studio, Charleston Dance Studio, on Savannah Highway.

“She was raised there. As soon as she started moving, we said ‘Let’s try it,’” Kim Roberts said.

Macy said her favorite types of dance are jazz, contemporary and ballet. She spends about 11 hours a week rehearsing.

“Without good grades, there would be much less dance,” Mike Roberts said.

Macy said she loves to dance because of the versatility it gives her and she would like to pursue a career as a professional dancer.

Even though the 12-year-old has worked with and met leaders in the industry (like Abby Lee Miller of “Dance Moms,” who she said is really nice in person) she still stays humble.

“Your attitude can push your career forward or keep you back. If you’re showy, no one will want to work with you,” she said.

As a top finalist, Macy will be flown to New York City next month to participate in a photo shoot to promote the Jo+Jax summer dancewear line. The grand prize winner will be determined by popular vote on Facebook.

Macy said many of her friends are not old enough to have a Facebook page to vote for her. As of last week, she was about 3,000 votes behind.

“I can’t do this without Charleston’s help,” Macy said.
