Students, ACE Basin Minnie Hughes Elementary School welcomed Julie Benz’s ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge team to the school to continue the ongoing study and protection of the Lowcountry’s bluebird population.
The school partnered with ACE Basin educators in January to teach students about bluebird ecology and the importance of the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge.
Benz, an ACE Basin educator, and her team taught students from Child Development through sixth grade about the habitats of bluebirds and worked with them on constructing bluebird boxes.
The boxes were mounted around the school and the ACE Basin during a follow-up field trip in April.
Music student wins Charleston Academy of Music piano student Jenny Yao competed in the solo and concerto categories at the S.C. Music Teachers Association State Pre-College Auditions at the USC School of Music in Columbia.
Yao won first place in both categories in her age division.
She is scheduled to perform on May 20 at the SCMTA Pre-College Honors Recital.
Yao studies piano with CAM instructor Irina Pevz-ner.
The performance will be at 4 p.m. at the USC School of Music.
William Peace grad Sabrina Simmons, a human resources major from Charleston, was one of more than 190 graduates from William Peace Uni-versity’s 140th Commencement exercises in Raleigh, N.C.
Peace was an all-women’s institution for its first 152 years.
The North Carolina school began offering coeducational evening courses through the William Peace School of Professional Studies in 2009.
In 2011, Peace College transitioned to William Peace University and will begin admitting male students to its day program in Fall 2012.
Wofford honors Zachary W. Beaver was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford College. Beaver’s parents are William and Sherrie Beaver of Mount Pleasant.
In addition, the following students were inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, a National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society at Wofford College:
C.J. Tria, a son of Eustolia Tria of Daniel Island; and Rainey Tyrrell, a daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Tyrell of Hollywood.
