Trident Literacy will receive $65,000 to establish a holistic and comprehensive family literacy program at its Celebration Station site on Reynolds Avenue in North Charleston.

“We are thrilled to be one of seven programs nationwide to receive a family literacy grant from the prestigious Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy,” said Eileen Chepenik, Trident Literacy’s Executive Director.

More than 600 programs nationwide applied for these funds. Only seven grants were awarded. Trident Literacy’s grant is the only award in South Carolina.

Celebration Station is in the heart of the Chicora-Cherokee community, one of the most underserved, impoverished and highest crime areas in the community.

“The need could not be greater,” Chepenik said. “Within a mile of the site, nearly 1,500 adults do not have a high school credential and more than 800 have less than a ninth-grade education. These individuals are also experiencing high rates of unemployment.”

The family literacy program will work with 20 high-poverty parents and their preschool age children. Parents will attend classes four days a week to further their education and work skills, while their preschool children will go to an on-site literacy-focused early childhood education program. Parents also will be taught how to be better parents and will have structured interactive time with their children doing developmentally appropriate activities. The program will include financial literacy and home visits.

In announcing the grant, the Barbara Bush Foundation said it is “dedicated to establishing literacy as a value in every home in America. Our motivation: Educated parents mean educated children. Nearly 25 years ago, first lady Barbara Bush launched the national, nonprofit foundation to help provide parents and children the skills needed to read together as a family and achieve a lifetime of learning. Today, honorary chair Barbara Bush and the foundation’s co-chairs, Jeb Bush and Doro Bush Koch, continue to address the literacy challenges in our nation and strive to make a meaningful difference in countless lives.
