rUNdead 5K: Oct. 27. 5 p.m. start. Old Towne Creek County Park. Zombies are invading West Ashley during this new 5K obstacle run. The inaugural rUNdead 5k will feature a race on the trails of Old Towne Creek County Park (adjacent to Charles Towne Landing). If available, late registration will take place between 3-4:30 p.m. on Oct. 27. Participants ages 10-15 can register for this course, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Oct. 27, 31: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30 a.m.-noon. Walk through many distinct habitats will allow group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-in registrations at Caw Caw are welcome. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.
Oct. 31: College Days at James Island County Park. Noon-7 p.m. Climbing is a fun way to get into shape and to meet new people. It also is a great social activity. Students will receive a free harness rental and shoe rental with the regular price of admission. Climbers 17 and under must have a Hold Harmless Form signed by a parent or legal guardian. Registration is not necessary. Fee: $10.
Oct. 25: After School Adventures: Rock Climb at James Island County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. In the classroom all day? Well come out after school and climb with us. Learn basic climbing skills and have some fun. Age: 6-12. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 26: Beachwalker Bird Walks at Beachwalker Park. 9:30 a.m.-noon. The southwestern end of Kiawah Island is an excellent place to spot seabirds and shorebirds. Group will hike nearly two miles of pristine beach looking for a variety of birds, including raptors and songbirds. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: free; however, pre-registration is required.
Oct. 26: After-School Adventures: Archery at Wannamaker County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. Archery is an age-old activity that has become a fast growing sport for youth. Enjoy a fun afternoon while you learn safe practices of archery and get your chance to shoot a bull’s-eye. Age: 8-12. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 26: Night Climbing: Halloween Moonlight Climb at James Island County Park. 6-11 p.m. Howl at the moon with us at this special Halloween edition of the Night Climb. Come in costume for a chance to win some great prizes. Test your reflexes on the International Speed wall or take flight in our high-flying dyno contest. Prizes will be awarded. Pizza and drinks will be available for purchase. Participants ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Equipment not included in climbing fee; bring your headlamp/flashlight. Oct. 27: Supercalifragilistic Saturday at Palmetto Islands County Park. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Have a super Saturday with us as we plan our day around kids-only outdoor activities. Oct. 27: Advanced Climbing Clinics: Climbing 302: Advanced Rescues at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Group will briefly review basic rescue techniques and then go into more advanced scenarios. Participants should have a current CCPRC Belay Card and have taken Climbing 205: Top Rope Rescues or have equivalent experience. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $60/$50 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 27: Junior Naturalist: Animal Sleuths at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 9 a.m.-noon. Learn to recognize important skull features, follow a set of footprints through the woods and figure out an animal’s diet by what it left behind. Oct. 27: Carolina Blues at Wannamaker County Park. 10-11 a.m. Part chemistry and part magic, indigo is fascinating. Try your hand at the “king of dyestuffs” and learn about the peculiar blue hue. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Program includes a fun tie-dyeing activity. A 100 percent cotton cloth is required. Cloth will not be provided by CCPRC. Oct. 27: Local Sea Kayak Trips: Coburg Creek Kayak Tour at CCPRC Headquarters. Noon-4 p.m. This is a fun tour that passes by an old dairy while winding through a salt marsh creek. Group will end up on the Stono River for a brief bit, then paddle Wappoo Cut back to the boat landing. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 28: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 202: Intermediate Technique at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. This intermediate technique class will help you progress to the next level. Oct. 28: Intro to Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) at James Island County Park. 2-3:30 p.m. Because of its simplicity and fun factor, SUPing has become the fastest growing paddle sport in the country. Oct. 30: Little Explorers: Pumpkin Pals at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10-11 a.m. Learn about the parts of a plant through a memorable orange fruit. Scoop seeds, investigate plant life cycles and have fun decorating a pumpkin to take home. Programs are for children ages 3-5 and their registered and paid adult chaperons. Age: 3 & up. Oct. 30-Nov. 4: Rock Climbing Trips: North Carolina Mountains. 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. (Tuesday), departs 6 a.m. (Saturday) and returns 8 p.m. (Sunday). Travel to the North Carolina mountains.
