The coffee industry wants heavy drinkers to know that Finnish scientists last year discovered a five-cup-a-day regimen can help offset liver damage. But can one morning cup mitigate the effects of a foolishly spent night?
Probably not: Caffeine narrows blood vessels and elevates blood pressure, which may exacerbate hangover symptoms. But there's some evidence that coffee can counteract ethanol, and its stimulating effects mask fatigue.
To combat hangovers (and the caffeine withdrawal headaches that make them worse), Ross Jett of Black Tap Coffee, 70½ Beaufain St., recommends a "shakerato": a double long-shot of espresso, shaken with ice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker.
