A woman crossing Sam Rittenberg Boulevard near Ashley Hall Road was killed when she was struck by a car at 12:45 a.m. today, police said.
According to Charleston Police Department spokeman Charles Francis, a city police officer was traveling behind the car when it struck the woman. She was thrown from the first lane to the third lane by the impact.
The officer started CPR on the woman with "negative results" until personnel with the Charleston Fire Department and Charleston County EMS arrived on the scene. EMS personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Francis said the Charleston County Coroner's Office also arrived on the scene. The coroner has yet to release the identity of the woman.
At this time, no charges have been filed but the investigation is still underway, Francis said.
