Cameron Mackintosh’s new 25th anniversary production of the Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg musical rendition of Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables” will anchor the 2012-13 Best of Broadway season at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center.

With new staging and reimagined scenery inspired by Hugo’s own paintings, the musical will run Feb. 19-24 for eight performances.

Set in early 19th century France, the plot of “Les Miserables” follows the stories of a multitude of characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The original musical production debuted at the Barbican Centre in London in 1985, and it is said to be the second-longest-running musical in the world after “The Fantasticks.”

The Best of Broadway series announced four other productions for 2012-13: “Rock of Ages” (Oct. 4-5), “Shrek: The Musical” (Nov. 23-24); “West Side Story” (Dec. 18-19) and “Blue Man Group” (Jan. 11-12).

Best of Broadway also will present a one-night-only special performance by Mannheim Steamroller on Dec. 1.

Showcasing national touring Broadway shows, the Best of Broadway series is presented by the North Charleston Performing Arts Center and the Nederlander Producing Company of America, now in their ninth year of collaboration.
