Key dates for the courtship between Team CHS -- the local air-service group consisting of aviation, tourism and economic development officials -- and Southwest Airlines:

October 2006: Team CHS meets with consulting firm Seabury Airline Planning Group and identifies Southwest as a long-term priority.

June 2007: Team CHS and Seabury make presentation to Southwest's planning department. Southwest says it's refining its business model to fit medium-sized cities but to keep in touch.

June 2009: Team CHS decides to make another run at Southwest.

August 2009: Southwest's planning department makes first formal visit to Charleston and touches off five months of regular discussions.

January 2010: Southwest decides Charleston is a viable market.

May 11, 2010: Southwest announces its plans to launch service to Charleston within a year.
