$1.3 million drainage project aims to curb flooding on Folly Beach

Floodwaters on Center Street surged into the Sand Dollar Social Club on July 27, but the concrete-block building was not damaged.

A 61-year-old kayaker became sick Thursday, beached his kayak and called for help, according to the Coast Guard.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the boater put out a distress call on Marine VHF Channel 16. The man told the Coast Guard he had been kayaking in the Bull Island area and was getting cramps from dehydration.

According to Peter Rogers, public information officer for the Charleston County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, the kayaker was transported from Bull Island to Garris Landing in Awendaw by the operators of the Bull Island-Cape Romain ferry service.

The man was checked out by Charleston County EMS but declined treatment, Rogers said.
