Jail officer accused in sex case fired

Samuel Lamar Brown

A detention officer at the Charleston County jail who was accused this week of having sex with an inmate was fired Thursday, said sheriff's Maj. Jim Brady, a spokesman for the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Samuel Lamar Brown, 25, of North Charleston, was arrested Tuesday by the State Law Enforcement Division, accused of having sex with a female inmate at the jail while he was on duty in June. He was charged with official misconduct of a police officer and first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate. He was released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond.

Brown was placed on leave without pay immediately after his arrest. He was terminated for violating the detention center's policy and procedures, Brady said.
