Local nonprofit groups and the federal government are teaming up to provide free tax preparation, housing help and other services today at Northwoods Mall.
Trident United Way, the Trident Urban League and the Internal Revenue Service are organizing the financial services fair 10 a.m.-2 p.m. as part of National Earned Income Tax Credit Day.
Working families earning less than $49,000 may qualify for free tax-preparation services and the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is worth as much as $5,000. Lowcountry residents fail to claim EITCs in the amount of about $16 million a year, the IRS said.
Among other services available today will be life counseling from the Center for Women, job help from Increasing HOPE and community connections from the 2-1-1 Hotline.
Also, the IRS said it will offer Saturday hours at its Taxpayer Assistance Center in West Ashley to provide free tax help for households that earned less than $49,000 last year. Hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. today and Feb. 5. The center is at 1 Poston Road, Suite 200, off Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.
