COLUMBIA — Voters would decide in November whether they want to keep electing the lieutenant governor, secretary of state and superintendent of education under legislation given key approval Wednesday in the House.

The proposal would have the governor and lieutenant governor run on the same ticket and make the other statewide officers part of the governor's Cabinet.

The proposed constitutional amendment passed 83-24. It needed at least a two-thirds vote. The plan needs another routine vote before going to the Senate.
