Chestnut Oaks Middle School

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old girl wrote a threat on the restroom floor at her South Carolina middle school.

News outlets report that students at Chestnut Oaks Middle School found and reported a message threatening to "shoot the school down." Investigators say surveillance footage led them to identify the girl, who is accused of writing the message while class was in session Monday.

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis says authorities don't believe the girl had the ability to carry out the threat. He says her case will be sent to family court.

A wave of threats has targeted schools across the nation in the wake of last week's shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead.
