Reports that Folly Beach County Park will remain closed through all of next year come as no surprise to the seaside city's mayor.
Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin said Wednesday that the severe erosion that forced county officials to close the park in early September remains a serious problem at the popular park.
"Unless we can get some emergency money" to repair the park, it's not advisable to try to open it, Goodwin said.
Officials at the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, which operates the park, reportedly have decided to keep the park closed. They said in September they hoped to reopen for 2012. PRC officials could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
A PRC web page states only, "Due to heavy erosion and unstable conditions caused by Hurricane Irene, Folly Beach County Park, located at the west end of Folly Beach, SC, is closed to the general public until further notice."
