SUMMERVILLE — The new year was not yet six hours old when Chandler Maxwell made his appearance into the world.
He was born at 5:49 a.m. Sunday at Summerville Medical Center, the first reported birth of the new year in the Charleston area.
“I just thank God he’s healthy,” said his father, Damon Maxwell of Summerville, who works at a medical supply company.
Chandler weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces. He was sleeping in his mother’s arms Sunday afternoon, wearing a brightly colored “Happy New Year” outfit provided by the nurses.
“I just want him to be a success at whatever he decides to do,” said his mother, Shana White, a guidance counselor at Summerville High School.
More than a dozen relatives from both sides of the family filled the hospital room, fussing over Chandler and congratulating the parents.
“This is just a fraction of them,” White said of the support network that Chandler will enjoy.
