Police on Friday accused two people of concealing information about the shooting death this month of a 27-year-old man in a West Ashley driveway.

Demeatrius Raynard Smalls, 24, of Jenkins Avenue in North Charleston, and Robert Ramone Fields Jr., 24, of Hazelwood Drive in Charleston, both face charges of obstruction of justice, according to the Charleston Police Department.

About 10:40 p.m. Jan. 5, a neighbor found Kentrell Carrell Samuel lying in a driveway at 9 San Miguel Road, which is just north of Citadel Mall. The county coroner said that's where Samuel died of a gunshot wound.

"Detectives determined that Smalls and Fields attempted to hinder or impede the murder investigation by concealing information about the incident," police spokesman Charles Francis said in a statement.

According to arrest warrants, the two men told detectives that they were not in the neighborhood on the night of the crime. But later, witnesses told the police that they saw Smalls and Fields in a gray car as it sped away from the crime scene after the fatal shot was fired.

Samuel had convictions for illegally carrying a firearm and for possession of cocaine.

The two suspects also have drug arrests, according to Charleston County court records. The police said they have information that indicates Smalls and Fields were involved in the killing, but they didn't say who they think shot Samuel.
