Elderly man dies in accident

A 79-year-old man died Thursday afternoon when he crashed his pickup truck into a school bus on the Glenn McConnell Parkway in West Ashley.

Fred Ford of Charleston died at the scene, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Myers said. The bus driver was the only person on the bus and was not injured, said Charles Francis, Charleston police public information officer.

The wreck happened about 12:30 p.m., when the bus driver turned left from Bairds Cove Road onto the parkway, and Ford hit the left rear of the bus, Francis said. Traffic was blocked at Magwood Drive as police investigated the scene.

Ford suffered body trauma, but it was not clear if he died from his wounds or possibly some natural cause, Myers said. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Myers said Ford was wearing his seat belt.

Police are investigating whether any charges will be filed.
